Azerbaijan emergencies services carry out a rescue operation on a burning oil rig in the Caspian Sea with dozens feared dead. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Fire engulfs an oil rig in the Caspian Sea with some 29 people missing and now feared dead. Rescue operations have been underway with 33 people saved. The state oil company's Vice President Khoshbakht Yusifzade says the explosion was not connected to the oil rig itself but was caused by waves hitting the platform. (SOUNDBITE) (Azeri) VICE PRESIDENT OF AZERBAIJAN'S STATE OIL COMPANY SOCAR, KHOSHBAKHT YUSIFZADE, SAYING (ACCORDING TO TRANSLATION): "One of the pipelines bringing gas from the wells to the platform could not stand the force of the waves. As a result there was an explosion." The fire erupted after a storm damaged a natural gas pipeline -- causing the platform's partial collapse.
